Welcome

A narrative inquiry into the largest school district takeover in Texas history.

Welcome to the doctoral studies portfolio of Dr. Tonya M. McBride-Montgomery, a retired principal of the Rhodes School for Performing Arts K-8 Charter School and a 25-year veteran of the Houston Independent School District. This site documents her dissertation research at Alverno College — a qualitative inquiry into the perceived motivations and lived consequences of the Texas Education Agency's wholesale takeover of HISD.

The pages that follow are organized as chapters in a doctoral monograph: a statement of acknowledgment, a biography, the dissertation itself in five parts, a bibliography, a glossary of key terms, a curated blog of community reporting, and a closing poem written in the voice of a witness.
